Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung's FAZ+ Digital Subscription: A Success Story with a Premium Twist

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung's digital subscription, FAZ+, launched in October 2018, has been a resounding success, boasting nearly 165,000 subscribers according to the latest IVW figures. Yet from the publisher's perspective, there's one catch: despite several price increases, the standard rate—€3.45 per week for the first year and €5.95 thereafter—remains relatively low by FAZ standards.

Now, the newspaper has rolled out a premium tier to tap into what it believes is a segment of FAZ+ users willing to pay more. On March 24, it introduced FAZ+ Premium, distinguishing itself from the standard FAZ+ with additional content, an ad-free experience, and more user accounts. The new offering targets readers "who value FAZ's journalism and seek in-depth reporting along with extra services," the paper stated.

Newsletters, Ad-Free Browsing, and Four User Accounts

FAZ+ Premium includes four Premium Newsletters covering finance, digital economy, global markets, and law ("Einspruch"), as well as exclusive premium articles on FAZ.net. Subscribers enjoy an ad-free experience on the website and in the apps, plus four separate user accounts—ideal for family sharing. The first-year price is set at €6.70 per week, rising to €8.70 thereafter.

The groundwork for FAZ+ Premium was laid incrementally in 2023 with the Pro series, which offered deep-dive expertise on digital economy, law, global markets, and finance. Previously available to all FAZ+ subscribers, these specialized packages—such as the AI-focused Digitalwirtschaft briefing—now require a Premium upgrade.

This strategy of tiered subscriptions mirrors moves by other major publishers. Since 2024, Der Spiegel has offered not only its Premium and Premium Combo tiers but also a Starter Subscription—a lower-cost option granting limited access to paywalled articles.
