Freiburg University rocked by decades-long hidden camera abuse scandal

A hidden camera scandal at the University of Freiburg has sparked outrage after a court ruling exposed years of abuse. The case, revealed on 9 March 2026, involves a former academic advisor who secretly filmed numerous women over more than 15 years. Since then, more victims have come forward, though the exact number remains unclear. The scandal first surfaced when a court confirmed the advisor's actions in early March. Reports suggest the case may involve several hundred victims, though official figures have not been released. Since the ruling, additional individuals have stepped forward with their own accounts.

Political pressure is now mounting for a full investigation. Nadyne Saint-Cast, a Freiburg state lawmaker, has demanded transparency and accountability from the university. She is pushing for answers on how the offences went unnoticed for so long and how many people were truly affected.

Saint-Cast has also called for stronger safeguarding measures, including clearer reporting channels and better prevention strategies. The university, facing criticism over its handling of the case, has pledged to engage with the campus community and introduce internal reforms.

Observers note that the scandal has severely damaged public trust in the institution. Victim support and institutional accountability are now key priorities as the investigation moves forward. The University of Freiburg is under increasing scrutiny to address the fallout from the scandal. With more victims coming forward, demands for transparency and systemic change are growing. The case has highlighted the need for stricter oversight and better protections within academic institutions.
