Freiburg's Democracy Initiative swaps speeches for typewriters and pizza nights
A new Democracy Initiative in Freiburg is pushing for greater political engagement through unusual methods. Instead of traditional campaigns, it will use typewriters, pizza nights, and open discussions to get people involved. The project aims to make sure citizens’ concerns are heard before coalition talks begin. The initiative kicks off on February 24 with a typewriter campaign in Offenburg and Waldshut. Residents will be invited to type their political wishes and criticisms onto postcards. This hands-on approach is designed to make participation more accessible and personal.
Another key part of the project is the *Pizza Meets Politics* series. These events target people in unstable living situations, offering food alongside political discussions to boost voter turnout. Organisers hope the informal setting will lower barriers to engagement. Support for the initiative comes from several local groups. The Archdiocese of Freiburg’s Adult Education Center, Caritas Freiburg, and the Catholic Family Association are all backing the effort. Public events will also take place at venues like St. Ulrich Monastery Education Center and St. Georg Parish Center in Freiburg. Lectures, election guides, and evening discussions will run alongside the campaign to keep conversations going.
The Democracy Initiative wants to show that active participation strengthens democracy. By collecting citizens’ concerns early, organisers plan to ensure these views are considered in future coalition negotiations. The mix of creative methods and community support aims to reach a wider audience than traditional political campaigns.
