Georgia weighs Ukraine's call for talks amid shifting regional alliances
Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili has responded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s proposal for talks with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. The meeting, suggested to take place in Yerevan, comes as Kyiv seeks to strengthen ties with Tbilisi amid shifting regional dynamics.
Bochorishvili highlighted Georgia’s strategic importance as a 'bridge across a broad neighbourhood', noting its growing role in transit and diplomacy. Bochorishvili addressed Ukraine’s renewed push to rebuild relations with Georgia. She explained that Kyiv’s interest stems from Tbilisi’s expanding influence as a regional hub. Many countries, including Ukraine, now see engagement with Georgia as vital.
The minister’s remarks follow Zelenskyy’s recent initiative to hold direct discussions with Kobakhidze. The proposed meeting in Yerevan signals an effort to ease tensions and explore cooperation.
Meanwhile, the European Union is preparing to impose fresh sanctions on Moscow. EU foreign ministers are also gearing up for negotiations with Russia in late May. These developments add to the broader geopolitical context shaping Ukraine’s outreach to Georgia. The proposed talks between Kyiv and Tbilisi reflect Georgia’s rising significance in the region. Ukraine’s diplomatic move coincides with wider European actions targeting Russia. The outcome of these discussions could influence future cooperation between the two nations.
