Georgia's Speaker Urges EU to Honor WWII Sacrifices on Europe Day
Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of Georgia’s Parliament, has criticised plans to separate Victory Day from Europe Day. He argued that the two events are deeply connected and should not be treated as unrelated. Papuashvili emphasised that 300,000 Georgians lost their lives in the fight to free Europe from fascism. He stated that without the Victory over fascism, neither the European Union nor Europe Day would exist today.
He directly addressed Pavel Herczynski, the EU Ambassador to Tbilisi. Papuashvili urged the ambassador not to repeat last year’s oversight of failing to honour Georgian soldiers during Europe Day celebrations. He called for a proper tribute to their heroism and sacrifice. The Speaker’s remarks highlight Georgia’s significant role in World War II. His appeal to Herczynski seeks to ensure recognition of Georgian contributions in future commemorations. The call comes ahead of upcoming Europe Day events.
