German families urged to host American exchange students in 2026–2027
Member of Parliament Jürgen Hardt Calls on Families, Couples, and Individuals in Solingen, Remscheid, and Wuppertal to Host Young Americans
Jürgen Hardt, a member of the German Bundestag, is urging families, couples, and individuals from Solingen, Remscheid, and Wuppertal to open their homes to young Americans as part of a temporary hosting program. Through the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX), interested participants have the opportunity to welcome a scholarship recipient for the 2026–2027 academic year, actively fostering cross-cultural understanding.
Strengthening Exchange Between Germany and the U.S.
This fall, 42 scholarship holders from the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange will travel to Germany with the support of AFS Intercultural Programs, a leading exchange organization. For these young Americans, the year ahead promises exciting new experiences: mastering the German language, exploring daily life and culture in Germany, and building lasting friendships.
A joint initiative of the U.S. Congress and the German Bundestag, the CBYX program has stood for decades as a symbol of the close ties and vibrant exchange between the two nations.
Host Families Gain Fresh Perspectives
"Hosting an exchange student is incredibly rewarding for everyone involved," emphasizes Hardt. While the young guests gain firsthand insights into German life, host families also experience their own routines through a new lens. Shared adventures, cultural exchange, and mutual learning often create bonds that endure long after the program ends.
In many cases, these special connections blossom into lifelong friendships.
Openness and Hospitality Key
Almost anyone can become a host family—whether a traditional family, a couple, or an individual. What matters most is openness, warmth, and having a spare room. AFS Intercultural Programs provides thorough preparation and continuous support throughout the exchange year.
Those interested in hosting a CBYX scholar starting in September 2026 can contact AFS directly to get involved in this unique program.
