German lawyer faces calls to resign over informant confrontation scandal

A political dispute has erupted after lawyer Anatol Anuschewski was linked to a confrontation involving an alleged informant for Bremen’s domestic intelligence agency. The Left Party faction is now demanding his resignation from an honorary judicial role. Reports suggest Anuschewski was present when activists confronted the man, who admitted to spying on a left-wing group for years. The controversy began when Der Spiegel revealed that Anuschewski accompanied a delegation from the Interventionist Left during a meeting with Dîlan S., a man accused of being a long-term informant. The man confessed to passing information to the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in exchange for at least €500 a month over eight years. He also admitted to forming romantic relationships within the group he was monitoring, a practice that violates legal guidelines.

Anuschewski, a lawyer specialising in migration and social law with a known anti-fascist stance, was present during the confrontation. Sophia Leonidakis, leader of the Left Party faction, claimed he likely attended in a professional capacity rather than as an activist. However, the faction argues that his involvement raises questions about impartiality, given his past role as a judge at the State Constitutional Court for one legislative term. The Left Party further suspects that the intelligence agency itself leaked details about Anuschewski’s presence, turning the incident into a public spectacle. They have called for his immediate resignation from his current position as an alternate judge at the court, which he has held since 2023.

The dispute centres on whether Anuschewski’s actions conflict with his judicial responsibilities. His presence during the confrontation with the informant has drawn criticism, particularly from political opponents. The Left Party’s demand for his resignation now places pressure on the State Constitutional Court to address the matter.
