German Red Cross demands stable funding for voluntary service reforms
The German Red Cross (DRK) is urging the federal government to improve funding for its planned reform of voluntary service programs.
"At present, many young people still cannot afford to do voluntary service because the pocket money they receive is too low," Nadja Saborowski, deputy head of the youth and welfare department, told the Rheinische Post (Wednesday edition). "For organizations like the DRK, it is crucial that we finally have sufficient, multi-year funding to ensure stability and reliability for both employees and institutions."
She also welcomed the announcement by Federal Education and Family Minister Karin Prien (CDU) that a draft law would be presented later this year. "A strong civilian alternative to military service is urgently needed to boost civic engagement and make society more resilient in times of crisis," Saborowski said. "The real test will be in the details—whether this actually leads to meaningful progress for voluntary services."
