Germany and Portugal forge stronger economic and defence alliances in Berlin talks
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to strengthen economic and defence ties with Portugal during a visit by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. The two leaders met in Berlin to discuss trade expansion, digital transformation, and potential military cooperation.
Chancellor Merz emphasised the importance of deepening economic relations between Germany and Portugal. He pointed to strong demand for German IT expertise in Portugal and highlighted opportunities for collaboration between Lufthansa and TAP Air Portugal.
Prime Minister Montenegro noted a 150% increase in Portuguese tech exports in 2025, crediting German companies for playing a key role in Portugal’s economic growth. Both leaders also stressed the need for new trade agreements to boost commerce with other nations. On defence, Merz mentioned Portugal’s possible acquisition of the Boxer armoured vehicle system. He suggested this could improve integration between the two countries’ armed forces. Additionally, the digitalisation ministers of Germany and Portugal are working on joint projects to advance digital transformation.
The talks in Berlin focused on concrete steps to expand trade, digital innovation, and military cooperation. Portugal’s growing tech sector and potential defence deals could further strengthen ties with Germany in the coming years.
