Germany’s coal villages secure millions to survive energy transition
North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister for Building, Ina Scharrenbach (CDU), visited six villages near the Hambach and Garzweiler lignite mines on Monday. She announced significant funding for these communities, ensuring their survival as the region transitions away from lignite coal.
The minister presented multi-million-euro commitments during a 'Future Day' event. Erkelenz expects around €170 million, with former residents and displaced villagers granted the right of first refusal to repurchase their homes. The funds will be used to modernize infrastructure, including sewer systems and roads, and convert a former kindergarten in Keyenberg into a village community center.
For the revitalization of five Erkelenz district villages, the minister handed over a €14.3 million funding notice at Sacred Heart Church in Kuckum. The municipality of Merzenich has secured €60 million for the preserved village of Morschenich, with the first priority being the rebuilding of the village’s historic church.
