Germany's Jewish communities face existential threat, warns antisemitism commissioner

Uwe Becker, Hesse’s Antisemitism Commissioner, has issued a stark warning about the future of Jewish life in Germany. He urged civil society to take immediate action, stressing that the opportunity to preserve Jewish communities in the country is rapidly fading. His call comes amid growing concerns over rising antisemitism across Europe.

Speaking at a recent event, Becker highlighted the alarming spread of antisemitism, particularly forms linked to hostility toward Israel. He noted that such prejudice has become the most common type in recent years. The situation, he said, is not unique to Germany—Jewish communities in Belgium, France, and the UK also face severe challenges.

Becker insisted that antisemitism must not be allowed to take hold in public spaces, schools, or everyday life. He called on associations, churches, educational institutions, and media outlets to lead efforts in combating hatred. Educational programmes and direct exchanges between Germans and Israelis, he argued, are vital for fostering understanding. The commissioner also offered his support for initiatives aimed at dialogue and awareness. Without stronger action, he warned, Jewish life risks disappearing as a living part of Germany’s identity.

Becker’s appeal underscores the urgency of collective action against antisemitism. He has pushed for broader engagement from all sectors of society to protect Jewish communities. The warning signals a critical moment for Germany’s efforts to preserve its Jewish heritage and ensure safety for its citizens.
