The SPD and its fight against the 'comrade hedgehog' - Germany's SPD launches bold reinvention amid slumping poll numbers
Germany’s Social Democrats (SPD) are launching a major push to reinvent themselves while still in government. The party’s leadership will gather this Saturday for a strategy retreat, marking the start of a two-year process to draft a new party platform. This will be the first full reassessment of its policies since 2007.
The move comes as the SPD faces low poll ratings and internal tensions, with current support hovering between 14 and 15 percent. The retreat will feature foundational speeches from co-leaders Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas. Their goal is to set a new direction for the party, which has struggled to maintain momentum despite being part of the ruling coalition. General Secretary Tim Klüssendorf has called for the SPD to become more open and outward-facing, moving away from its old image as a closed-off comrade hedgehog.
The party is also searching for a unifying project to energise its base and reduce internal divisions. Recent efforts, like the bold inheritance tax proposal, show the SPD’s desire to play from the front rather than react to opponents. Yet challenges remain, including the need to revive economic growth and push through major reforms while holding onto power in key state elections.
Two regional votes this year—Rhineland-Palatinate in March and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in September—will test the SPD’s ability to keep its state premierships. Success in these elections could provide a much-needed boost as the party works to redefine itself. The SPD’s two-year platform review will shape its future direction. If successful, the process could help the party regain influence and stability. But with low poll numbers and upcoming state elections, the road ahead remains demanding.
