Ghana Parliament Rejects Bid to Halt Chief Justice Nominee’s Vetting
Parliament's Speaker Alban Bagbin has dismissed an attempt by Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin to halt the vetting of Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice nominee. Afenyo-Markin cited a suit challenging Baffoe-Bonnie's removal and a petition for his removal as Acting Chief Justice.
Afenyo-Markin moved a motion to suspend Baffoe-Bonnie's vetting. However, Bagbin ruled that external actions, such as the ongoing suit, cannot interfere with Parliament's work. He declared the motion inadmissible and returned it to Afenyo-Markin.
Bagbin emphasized that no law can prevent Parliament from carrying out its duties due to a suit. He stated that Parliament will continue with the vetting process as scheduled.
The Speaker's decision clears the way for Baffoe-Bonnie's vetting to proceed. Afenyo-Markin's attempt to delay the process has been unsuccessful. Parliament will now continue with the appointment process for the new Chief Justice.
