Ghana’s Education Minister once lost his degree over a plagiarized thesis statement

Haruna Iddrisu, the current Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, faced a past academic scandal. In 2006, the University of Ghana revoked his Master's Degree in Sociology due to alleged plagiarism in his thesis statement. Iddrisu's thesis statement, titled 'Sociological Investigation into Bribery and Corruption in the Public Service of Ghana', was found to have plagiarised content. Despite this, in 2009, he successfully defended a different thesis statement, 'Sociological Study of Bribery and Corruption in the Public Service of Ghana', before the Appointments Committee of Parliament. This thesis statement referenced 63 authorities, including the 1972 Commission of Enquiry report on bribery and corruption by Justice PD Anin. The University of Ghana's Academic Senate has not made any public decisions regarding the revocation of Iddrisu's master's degree since 2006. Haruna Iddrisu's past academic controversy does not appear to have hindered his political career. He continues to serve as the Minister of Education, a role he has held since 2021.
