Grandson on Trial for Murdering His Grandmother: What Allegedly Drove Him—and How He Appeared in Court
A 24-year-old man is standing trial at Munich I Regional Court on charges of murdering his grandmother to get his hands on her money. Prosecutors allege he killed the 76-year-old after she threatened to cut off contact, leaving him fearing the loss of her financial support.
According to the indictment, he attempted to use her bank cards to access her safe deposit box, where she kept around €69,000, $20,000, and jewelry—but failed to open it.
Judge Hints at Potential Life Sentence Without Parole
Presiding Judge Elisabeth Ehrl warned at the outset of proceedings that, if convicted as charged, the defendant could face life imprisonment with a finding of "particular gravity of guilt." Such a ruling would make early release after 15 years far less likely.
The 24-year-old entered the courtroom with his hood pulled low over his head, shielding his face with a red file folder. At the start of the hearing, he fidgeted nervously with his hands, his legs bouncing up and down. A dispute over whether he should sit between his two defense attorneys rather than on the bench in front of them delayed proceedings in the morning.
Cleaner Discovers the Body
The victim's cleaning lady found her dead in her apartment on March 17 of last year. Prosecutors allege the grandson inflicted cuts on both of his grandmother's forearms with a knife and placed her in the bathtub to stage a suicide. Investigators, however, quickly suspected foul play. After several days, the grandson was arrested on suspicion of murder.
