Green Party warns of soaring gas prices amid winter energy crisis fears
Julia Verlinden, the Green Party’s deputy parliamentary group leader and energy policy spokesperson, has called on the government to prepare for rising gas prices. She warned that ongoing disruptions, such as the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, could push costs even higher this winter. Verlinden criticised the federal government for recently passing two laws that will increase gas demand. The Building Energy Modernisation Act and the Electricity Supply Security and Capacity Act (StromVKG) could worsen the situation, she argued. With most households locked into long-term gas contracts, consumers may not feel the full impact of price rises immediately.
She urged policymakers to act now, using the summer months to invest in alternatives and reduce reliance on gas. Without proactive measures, households could face unexpected financial strain later in the year. Verlinden also stressed the need for transparency, calling on the government to clearly communicate the challenges ahead.
The warning comes as concerns grow over energy security and affordability. If gas prices continue to climb, consumers may struggle with higher bills when contracts renew. Verlinden’s proposals focus on cutting demand and accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels.
