Green Youth slams Green Party over Hanau attack inaction six years later
On the sixth anniversary of the Hanau attack, the Green Party's youth wing has accused its parent organization of failing to take strong enough action against racism and extremism.
Hearing Green politicians now say that "Hanau must never happen again" is "hard to take seriously," Green Youth leader Luis Bobga told Süddeutsche Zeitung. "This is a party that wraps itself in flowery rhetoric about diversity and anti-racism when it's convenient, yet drags its feet on implementing essential police reforms and extremism prevention measures—even when they've had the chance to do so."
The Green Youth also criticized the party's Hessian branch for its handling of the attack's aftermath. "In Hesse, they were in government when investigations were delayed and mistakes were downplayed," Bobga continued. "If you promise solidarity, you have to deliver it. But in Hanau, loyalty once again went to their coalition partner—not to the victims of racist violence." The Greens, he argued, must demonstrate through concrete political action—not just Instagram Reels and polished statements—that they have learned from Hanau. "That has never been enough."
On February 19, 2020, a 43-year-old German man shot and killed nine people in Hanau for racist motives before killing his mother and himself.
