Greifswald reverses bike-friendly policies on Mühlenstraße after court ruling
Greifswald is reversing its bike-friendly policies in Mühlenstraße. The city administration, along with police, fire department, and traffic authority, has decided to lift the bike street regulation following a court ruling. This change aims to balance the interests of cyclists, businesses, and residents.
The Greifswald Administrative Court ruled in favour of a plaintiff who argued that resident parking spaces were too restrictive for cyclists and posed safety risks. Starting September 8, 2025, cyclists can still use Mühlenstraße but must ride single file, ending the side-by-side cycling allowed previously.
The street will once again be part of the 30 km/h zone in the city center. This reversal is due to the need to accommodate delivery traffic and other services, as no other solution was found to balance all interests.
Mayor Dr. Stefan Fassbinder and Senator for Urban Development Achim Lerm expressed regret at the loss of bike-friendly infrastructure in Greifswald.
The lifting of the bike street regulation in Mühlenstraße is effective from September 8, 2025. Cyclists must now ride single file, and the street returns to the 30 km/h zone. The city regrets this change but aims to balance the needs of cyclists, businesses, and residents.
