Halle (Saale) Proposes Bold Industrial Park to Combat Population Decline
The city of Halle (Saale) is facing a sharp decline in population over the coming years. Without action, officials warn that young people and families will continue to leave. Now, the city council faction Hauptsache Halle is pushing for a bold economic strategy to reverse the trend and secure future growth. Hauptsache Halle has called for a more aggressive approach to economic development. The group wants Halle to take proactive steps, such as securing new land and removing barriers to expansion. Their focus is on creating jobs and attracting investment to halt the city’s shrinking population.
At the centre of their plan is a major commercial and industrial site in Halle-Tornau. Mario Kerzel, spokesperson for urban planning, described Tornau as the perfect location for a high-performance business park. The faction sees this as a long-term solution to boost the local economy. Andreas Wels, leader of Hauptsache Halle, stressed that Halle must position itself as a leading economic and industrial hub in Central Germany. Without new momentum, he warned, the city risks further population loss and a weakening economy.
The proposed industrial park in Tornau aims to create jobs and stabilise Halle’s population. City leaders believe a strong economic push is essential to keep residents from leaving. The next steps depend on whether the council adopts the faction’s strategy.
