Halle (Saale) residents gain new tools to shield personal data from sharing
The Citizens' Registration Office of the city of Halle (Saale) has announced that all residents have the right to object to the disclosure of their personal data stored in the population register under certain circumstances. This can be done online at www.halle.de/datenwiderspruch. According to the city administration, an in-person visit is not required.
Residents may also submit their objection in writing or orally for the record at the Citizens' Registration Office (Bürgerservicestelle Marktplatz 1) or at the branch offices at Am Stadion 6 (Halle-Neustadt) and Reilstraße 132. The objection remains valid indefinitely unless revoked. The form is also available for download and printing under www.halle.de/datenwiderspruch ('Forms and Other Documents').
Those who have already filed such an objection in previous years do not need to renew it.
Under §§ 42(3) and 50(1), (2), and (3) of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz, BMG) in its current version, residents may—without providing reasons—object to the release of their data from Halle (Saale)'s population register in the following cases:
- to public-law religious organizations as a family member of a member (§ 42(3), sentence 2 BMG);
- to nominating bodies (political parties, voter groups, and independent candidates) in connection with elections and referendums (§ 50(1) BMG);
- to elected officials, the press, and broadcasters regarding age and wedding anniversaries (§ 50(2) BMG);
- to directory publishers (§ 50(3) BMG).
