Halle's Historic St. John's Church Secures €50,000 for Urgent 2026 Repairs

St. John’s Evangelical Church in Halle (Saale) will receive €50,000 from Saxony-Anhalt for urgent repairs in 2026. The funding forms part of a larger €270,000 restoration project aimed at preserving the historic building. Despite the work, the church will stay open to visitors, including during events like Heritage Open Day.

Built in the late 19th century, St. John’s Church stands as a key landmark in southern Halle. Its design combines Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romanesque styles, making it a distinctive part of the city’s skyline. Beyond its architectural value, the church plays an active role in local social and cultural life.

The restoration will focus on repairing the eaves, masonry, and plasterwork. These fixes aim to secure the building’s historic structure while keeping it functional for religious services and community gatherings. Funding comes from the state, the congregation, and external donors. Thomas Pleye, president of the State Administrative Office of Saxony-Anhalt, highlighted the project’s importance. He noted that the grant supports heritage conservation and ensures the church remains a usable space for future generations. Saxony-Anhalt regularly funds similar projects to protect cultural monuments and enable their long-term use.

The €270,000 restoration will address critical damage while maintaining public access. Work is set to begin in 2026, with state funding covering a significant portion of the costs. The project will help preserve both the church’s architectural heritage and its role in Halle’s community life.
