INEC plans 1.4 million staff for Nigeria's 2027 elections with N873.78 billion budget
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has outlined plans for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. It will require over 1.4 million ad hoc personnel, a significant rise from the 1.2 million used in 2023. The budget for these elections has also increased sharply to N873.78 billion. INEC will deploy 707,384 corps members for the Presidential and National Assembly elections on January 16, 2027. Another 707,384 will be needed for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections on February 6, 2027. Most of these staff will come from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The commission praised corps members for their discipline, neutrality, and technological skills during past elections. It has pledged to improve their insurance coverage, welfare, and security arrangements for future deployments.
Additional personnel will also be required for off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states. Bye-elections in Nasarawa, Enugu, Rivers, Ondo, Kebbi, and Kano states will further increase staffing needs. The proposed budget of N873.78 billion marks a substantial jump from the N313.4 billion allocated for the 2023 elections. INEC’s plans include a larger workforce and a higher budget for the 2027 elections. The expanded use of NYSC members and enhanced welfare measures aim to ensure smoother electoral processes. The increased funding reflects the scale and complexity of the upcoming polls.
