Influencer Ordered to Pay $1.75M After Destroying Ex-Manager’s Marriage in Landmark Case

A North Carolina jury has ordered social media influencer Brenay Kennard to pay a substantial sum to Akira Montague, the ex-wife of her former manager, following a lawsuit alleging Kennard destroyed their marriage.

The jury awarded Akira Montague $1.75 million, with $1.5 million for 'alienation of affection' and $250,000 for 'criminal conversation'. This sizable award is not unusual in North Carolina, where verdicts in such cases have reached up to $30 million. To succeed in these lawsuits, plaintiffs must prove that the marriage had genuine love and affection, that this was destroyed, and that the defendant's conduct contributed to the loss.

Kennard was found liable for both 'alienation of affection' and 'criminal conversation'. Akira Montague, who is also the prosecutor in the case, filed the lawsuit in May 2024, alleging Kennard seduced her then-husband Tim Montague while serving as his manager. Only six U.S. states still recognize these claims, with North Carolina being one of them. These laws have roots in English common law and were brought to America during colonial times. Notably, high-profile figures like NFL star Fletcher Cox have also faced such lawsuits.

Brenay Kennard has been ordered to pay $1.75 million for her role in the breakdown of Akira Montague's marriage. This significant award reflects the seriousness of the allegations and the legal precedent in North Carolina regarding alienation of affection claims.
