Former German President Joachim Gauck, now 85, has been awarded the prestigious Görlitz Bridge Prize for his significant contributions to democracy and international understanding. The International Bridge Prize, established in 2005, honours individuals who have made outstanding contributions to democratic progress and mutual understanding in Europe. Previous recipients include notable figures such as writer Herta Müller, author Günter Grass, architect Daniel Libeskind, and Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.
Gauck, a former Lutheran pastor, served as the Federal President of Germany from 2012 to 2017. His commitment to democracy and human rights, both in Germany and internationally, has been widely recognised. The award acknowledges his extensive work in promoting democratic values and fostering international understanding.
