John Gore debuts at Cannes with Wallis Simpson film My Duchess
John Gore is entering the Cannes market for the first time with a new film about Wallis Simpson. The project, titled My Duchess, stars Dame Joan Collins and Isabella Rossellini. It centres on the woman who prompted Edward VIII to abdicate the throne in 1936. Gore chose the title My Duchess after rejecting The Bitter End for lacking a royal connection. The Royal Family has avoided using Windsor titles since the Duke of Windsor’s death in 1972.
The cast includes Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten, a choice Gore defended despite objections linked to Dance’s role in The Crown. Dame Joan Collins impressed Gore with her research on Simpson’s later years and her recent performance at the 2024 Emmy Awards.
John Gore Studios, known for films like Onward and Sideways and The Return of Stanley Atwell, is behind the production. Gore has previously noted that a Best Musical Tony Award can bring in vast financial rewards. He also believes long-running Broadway success depends on appealing to women in their late 40s. The film marks Gore’s debut at Cannes with a story tied to one of history’s most famous royal scandals. My Duchess brings together a seasoned cast to revisit a pivotal moment in British history. Its release will test Gore’s theory on what makes a production endure.
