Kazakhstan to Introduce Swimming Lessons in Schools from 2026

Kazakhstan is set to introduce swimming lessons into its school curriculum. The Kazakhstan Aquatics Federation and the Ministry of Education are teaming up to launch a pilot project in Almaty and Astana in 2026, with plans to roll it out nationwide.

The initiative aims to teach water safety skills to children and foster a love for aquatic sports. This comes amidst alarming global drowning statistics, with over 236,000 people losing their lives in 2024, including 82,000 children aged 1 to 14.

Kazakhstan boasts an impressive infrastructure for aquatic sports, with over 360 swimming pools nationwide, including 35 Olympic-standard 50-meter facilities. These support a thriving community of over 135,000 enthusiasts and over 900 qualified coaches.

The pilot project, set to begin in 2026, will initially cover Almaty and Astana. If successful, it will be expanded nationwide, potentially saving lives and promoting a healthy, active lifestyle through swimming.
