LAUSD under federal probe for mishandling teacher sexual misconduct cases
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is facing a federal investigation over its handling of sexual misconduct allegations. The U.S. Department of Education has launched a Title IX probe into claims that the district reassigns accused teachers instead of removing them from classrooms. The inquiry comes as LAUSD borrows hundreds of millions to settle abuse cases while its superintendent faces an FBI investigation.
The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is examining whether LAUSD violated Title IX by failing to protect students from sexual misconduct. Allegations include teachers engaging in exploitative 'romantic relationships' with pupils, alongside other forms of abuse. Officials claim one in ten children experiences grooming during their K-12 education.
The investigation focuses on LAUSD’s policy of reassigning accused staff to different schools rather than suspending them. A district spokesperson stated that teachers under investigation are sent home but not reassigned to another site. However, critics argue the current system leaves students at risk. LAUSD’s approach is tied to a union agreement that prevents immediate removals or terminations during probes. Meanwhile, the district has borrowed heavily to address the fallout, including a $250 million loan in March and a planned $500 million borrowing in 2025. The financial strain comes as Superintendent Alberto Carvalho is separately under FBI scrutiny.
The federal investigation will determine whether LAUSD’s policies breach Title IX protections. The district has already committed significant funds to settle abuse claims, with further borrowing planned. The outcome could reshape how the school system handles misconduct allegations moving forward.
