Lawmakers urge Trump to fill CFTC vacancies amid growing regulatory demands
US lawmakers are pushing for a fully staffed Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as regulatory demands grow. The call comes after the Senate Banking Committee advanced a bill that would expand the agency’s oversight of digital commodity markets. Leaders from the House Agriculture Committee have now urged President Trump to fill the CFTC’s four vacant seats without delay. The Senate Banking Committee voted 15-9 to move forward with the CLARITY Act, a proposal granting the CFTC broad new powers over spot digital commodity trading. If passed, the legislation would trigger an extensive rulemaking process, increasing pressure on the understaffed agency. Senator Amy Klobuchar responded by proposing an amendment to block new CFTC rules until at least four commissioners are in place.
In January, Bloomberg reported that the White House was reviewing a bipartisan list of potential nominees for the CFTC. Yet, since December, Chairman Michael Selig has remained the agency’s only sitting commissioner. The situation has left the CFTC with a heavy workload and limited capacity to implement changes. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn Thompson and Ranking Member Angie Craig sent a joint letter to Trump, stressing the need for a full five-member commission. They argued that a complete team would produce stronger regulations and better reflect the concerns of market participants. The letter also highlighted that filling the vacancies would align with Trump’s recent budget request for increased CFTC funding.
The push for a fully staffed CFTC follows the advancement of the CLARITY Act and rising regulatory challenges. With four commissioner seats empty, the agency faces delays in rulemaking and oversight. Lawmakers have made clear that swift nominations are essential to handle the expanding workload and new legislative demands.
