Lidl's Fredenberg store to close for major rebuild until 2027

Lidl’s Fredenberg supermarket will close this summer for a complete rebuild. The project will expand the store’s size and modernise its facilities. However, the temporary closure—and ongoing work at a nearby Penny market—will leave locals with fewer shopping choices for over a year. The existing Lidl store will be demolished, with construction set to begin in the coming months. The new building, scheduled to open in winter 2027, will increase the sales floor from 980 to 1,270 square metres. Wider aisles and updated shelving will improve accessibility, while modern refrigeration units will enhance product displays.

The fresh produce section will grow significantly, offering more space for fruits, vegetables, and baked goods. Shoppers will also find an expanded selection of fresh meat, dairy, and around 4,300 individual items overall. A rooftop solar array and an electric vehicle charging station will be added to reduce the store’s environmental impact. However, the rebuild comes with challenges. Elderly residents and those without cars may struggle with limited shopping options during construction. The nearby Penny market on Theodor-Heuss-Straße is also undergoing renovation, further reducing convenience. Notably, Schäfers Bakery will not return to the new Lidl store.

The upgraded Lidl will feature a larger sales area, improved product variety, and eco-friendly additions like solar panels. Yet, the closure of two local supermarkets at once means residents must plan for reduced access to groceries over the next year. The new store is expected to reopen in late 2027.
