Lünen-South residents and officials unite to tackle local challenges

What will become of the former school buildings? How can littering be tackled? And how can youth engagement at the pump bike track be strengthened? These and many other issues were discussed openly and passionately at the Lünen-South Roundtable on February 12.

Numerous residents took the opportunity to directly address their concerns with representatives from the city administration. Mayor Martina Förster-Teutenberg also participated in the roundtable as part of her neighborhood dialogue series, engaging with locals on-site.

A key focus was the issue of littering in the district. Reports from residents were recorded by the public order office, while the upcoming cleanup campaign by the association My Clean Lünen was promoted—alongside a call for everyone to take action and share responsibility for a clean living environment.

Vandalism at the Pump Bike Track

The future of the vacant former school buildings was another topic of intense discussion. The city referenced an internal working group tasked with strategically exploring potential new uses for the sites. The group's findings are expected to be presented and further debated at the next roundtable meeting.

Another pressing issue was the pump bike track, where young volunteers repeatedly face setbacks due to vandalism. The project advisory board has pledged to support youth initiatives in collaboration with KKG School, as well as local street workers. The goal is to develop solutions and empower young people in their efforts. Concrete proposals on this matter are also set to be unveiled at the next gathering.

The roundtable made one thing clear: Direct dialogue between residents, politicians, and administrators is a vital building block for the positive development of Lünen-South—and it thrives on the active participation of all involved.
