Malaysia's PM orders faster cloud seeding and transparency on elephants in Japan
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently met with senior officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) to review key policies. The discussions covered urgent environmental issues, including cloud seeding operations and the welfare of Malaysia’s national elephants currently in Japan.
During the meeting, Anwar Ibrahim directed MetMalaysia to speed up cloud seeding efforts in drought-hit states, particularly Kedah and Perlis. He proposed using drone technology to improve efficiency and overcome logistical challenges in these operations.
The welfare of three national elephants—Dara, Amoi, and Kelat—stationed in Japan was also a major topic. The Prime Minister stressed that any decisions about their future must prioritise their well-being and be based on clear facts. He called for full transparency in sharing information with the public. Anwar Ibrahim further reminded the ministry of the need for good governance, strong integrity, and zero tolerance for mismanagement. He described these principles as vital for creating a fair, prosperous, and sustainable Malaysia.
The meeting highlighted immediate actions for cloud seeding and long-term commitments to animal welfare. Officials were instructed to ensure decisions align with public transparency and the elephants’ best interests. The Prime Minister’s directives also reinforced accountability in environmental management.
