Mayfair heist gang jailed for £700,000 luxury robbery spree

A violent robbery at Phillips Auction House in Mayfair last year saw thieves escape with artworks and luxury goods worth over £700,000. The gang used a blue Mercedes to smash into the building before fleeing in a stolen Mini Cooper. Now, seven members of the group, including ringleader David Rigelsford, have been sentenced to a combined 22 years in prison. The raid took place on 26 May 2021, when the gang rammed a blue Mercedes into the doors of the high-end auction house. Once inside, they stole watches, designer clothing, and artworks—including pieces by Damien Hirst—with a total value exceeding £600,000. The stolen goods, combined with other items taken in the heist, pushed the haul past £700,000. The robbers then switched vehicles, escaping in a Mini Cooper that had been left nearby.

Mayfair remains one of London's worst-affected areas for street crime. Statistics show residents and visitors face a mugging risk 30 times higher than the London average, with around 115 robberies per 1,000 people. In response, wealthy shoppers from places like Dubai and the UAE now travel with private security when visiting the district.

The Metropolitan Police has stepped up efforts to tackle the issue. Since April 2021, personal robberies across London have dropped by 13%, partly due to increased patrols in known hotspots. The sentencing of Rigelsford and his six accomplices follows a series of similar high-value robberies across the capital last summer. The gang's prison sentences total 22 years, marking the end of a string of luxury store raids in central London. While Mayfair's robbery rates stay disproportionately high, police patrols and targeted operations have helped reduce incidents citywide. Private security measures among high-net-worth visitors also reflect ongoing concerns in the area.
