Meishan Earns National Recognition as China's Newest Cultural Heritage City
Meishan, also called Meizhou, has gained official recognition as a national historical and cultural city. The announcement came from China's State Council on March 1, 2026. Known as the hometown of the celebrated Song Dynasty poet Su Shi, the city boasts a heritage stretching back over a thousand years.
The designation highlights Meishan's deep cultural roots, well-preserved traditions, and unique regional identity. Its history, spanning the Song Dynasty and beyond, has long been valued for its contributions to Chinese literature and heritage.
Following the approval, the central government directed Sichuan province and Meishan's local authorities to enforce cultural relic protection laws. They were also tasked with promoting traditional Chinese culture within the city. As of March 20, 2026, less than three weeks after the official announcement, no immediate effects on tourism or the local economy have been recorded. Data on visitor numbers, economic shifts, or infrastructure changes remains pending as officials begin monitoring the situation.
The recognition places Meishan among China's officially protected historical cities. Authorities will now focus on preserving its landmarks and traditions while assessing long-term impacts on tourism and development. The city's ties to Su Shi and its rich cultural legacy remain central to its new status.
