Merz and Rubio affirm NATO's unity at Munich Security Conference

Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany’s CDU, met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Munich on Friday. The discussion took place during the Munich Security Conference, where Merz stressed the importance of NATO in his opening speech. Their private meeting lasted around half an hour. At the conference, Merz directed part of his address to the American audience. He repeated a key passage in English, highlighting the value of trust within NATO. He noted that Europeans understand how vital this trust is for the alliance’s strength.

Merz also pointed out that even the US, as a global power, cannot act alone. He argued that Washington relies on NATO’s support when facing major challenges. According to him, strategists at the Pentagon already recognise the alliance’s critical role. During the talks with Rubio, the focus remained on reinforcing transatlantic cooperation. Merz’s remarks underscored the shared belief that NATO remains essential for security on both sides of the Atlantic.

The meeting between Merz and Rubio came as part of broader discussions at the Munich Security Conference. Their talks reinforced the message that NATO’s unity depends on mutual trust and collaboration. Both sides acknowledged the alliance’s ongoing relevance in an era of shifting global power.
