Michigan Man Pleads No Contest to Child Sexual Assault Charges from 2000s
A 50-year-old man has pleaded no contest to three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in Michigan. The case involves assaults that took place between 2002 and 2008, with the victims all under the age of 13 at the time. Jason Kushmaul was initially charged in 2016 but had been living out-of-state before his extradition. His return to Michigan came as part of Operation Survivor Justice, a broader law enforcement effort targeting such offences.
Kushmaul now faces up to 25 years in prison. As part of his plea agreement, he must have no contact with the victims and will be required to register as a sex offender for life. His sentencing is set for May 15.
The case will conclude with Kushmaul's sentencing next month. If given the maximum penalty, he will serve a lengthy prison term. Authorities have not released further details on additional arrests linked to the operation.
