Following a tip from a resident, the Municipal Order and Service Department (KOS) of the city of Mönchengladbach discovered 39 absentee ballot documents for the upcoming citizens' referendum in a paper recycling bin over the past weekend. Staff immediately secured the materials.
Police have since received two additional reports from residents after absentee voting documents were also found in paper recycling containers. To date, a total of 81 undelivered absentee ballots have been recovered. More than 200,000 absentee voting packages were originally sent out.
The top priority now is to ensure proper delivery of the voting materials and prevent any potential interference with the electoral process. The recovered ballots have been promptly reissued for delivery, with some already redelivered to voters.
In addition, the city of Mönchengladbach is working closely with the responsible investigative authorities to fully clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
