Nettetal warns residents over fake smart meter scam letters

Households in Nettetal are receiving misleading letters about smart electricity meters. Competitive metering service providers are sending urgent offers, falsely claiming immediate action is required. Consumer advocates have now raised the alarm over these deceptive practices. The letters suggest consumers must quickly sign contracts for smart meter installation. Some even imply government subsidies are available, which is not true. Peter Klocke, head of networks at Stadtwerke Nettetal, confirmed there is no state funding for these installations.

The legally mandated rollout of smart meters is already underway, managed by the default provider, Stadtwerke Nettetal. Affected households will receive official notifications in due course, with no need to rush. Verbraucherzentrale NRW has stressed that consumers are under no obligation to use competitive providers, which often charge extra fees and require separate contracts.

Many residents have reported unsolicited offers from alternative providers. These companies falsely create a sense of urgency, pressuring people into unnecessary agreements. Stadtwerke Nettetal reassures customers that the transition will follow the prescribed deadlines without any forced participation. Stadtwerke Nettetal remains the responsible default provider for the region. Households will be contacted directly when their smart meter installation is due. Until then, no action is needed, and consumers should disregard misleading offers from third-party companies.
