New Brunswick elects new mayors in Fredericton and Moncton while Saint John retains Reardon

Local elections took place across New Brunswick on Monday, May 11, 2026. Voters chose mayors, councillors, and other representatives for their communities. Several cities saw new leaders emerge while others re-elected familiar faces. In Fredericton, Steve Hicks won the mayoral race. A longtime city councillor, he defeated Jenica Atwin, a former MP, to secure the position. The seat was open after Kate Rogers, the previous mayor, decided not to seek re-election.

Moncton elected Shawn Crossman as its new mayor. The city had been led by acting mayor Paulette Thériault since Dawn Arnold, the former mayor, was appointed to the Senate in 2025.

Saint John’s mayor, Donna Reardon, secured a second term. Her victory means she will continue leading the city for another four years. The elections marked a shift in leadership for some cities. New mayors will take office in Fredericton and Moncton, while Saint John retains its current leader. The results reflect the choices of voters across the province.
