Oberasbach celebrates 50 years of leadership with historic civic awards
Oberasbach has honoured decades of local leadership with a ceremony recognising key figures in the town’s development. Among them, Lothar Schmitt received the Communal Merit Medal in Silver for his 48 years of service on the council. The event also highlighted contributions from long-serving councillors and former mayors who shaped the community’s growth.
Lothar Schmitt’s influence on Oberasbach spans nearly half a century. He played a pivotal role in the town’s elevation to official town status and helped establish the youth centre. His dedication was formally acknowledged in 2024 with the Communal Merit Medal in Silver.
Birgit Huber led Oberasbach as First Mayor for 18 years before stepping down on May 1, 2026. Her successor, Thomas Diebenbusch, took office after her long tenure. Huber’s leadership was supported throughout by Gernot Höflinger, who worked alongside her across multiple committees. Her own path to the mayoralty was encouraged by Doris Bauer, a councillor who advocated for local schools and backed Huber’s candidacy in 2008. Other long-serving members also left their mark. Thomas Peter contributed 30 years to the council in two separate periods, serving twice as Third Mayor and sitting on Rangauwerke’s supervisory board. Peter Heinl brought over 25 years of experience, known for his direct SPD views and practical approach to local issues. Markus Gerstner took on the role of sports liaison in 2017, while Dana Koch joined the council in September 2025, quickly gaining experience in municipal governance.
The recognitions reflect Oberasbach’s tradition of sustained civic engagement. From infrastructure projects to educational advocacy, these individuals helped guide the town’s progress over generations. Their combined service totals well over a century of local leadership.
