Portugal Braces for Massive General Strike on June 3 Over Labour Reforms
Portugal’s largest trade union, the CGTP, has announced a new general strike for June 3. The decision comes after months of failed negotiations over labour reforms. Union leaders say workers’ conditions remain unresolved and demand immediate action. Tiago Oliveira, the CGTP’s secretary-general, confirmed the strike plans in a recent statement. He argued that the government’s labour reform package must be withdrawn entirely. According to Oliveira, the issues that led to the December 11 general strike have not been addressed.
Oliveira criticised the past nine months of talks as a 'charade' and a 'complete soap opera'. He claimed negotiations had failed to deliver meaningful change for workers. The CGTP now insists that only a full reversal of the reforms will satisfy their demands. The union has framed the June 3 strike as a necessary step to push for better pay, job security, and working conditions. Support for the action is expected to come from multiple sectors across the country.
The strike will take place on June 3, with the CGTP urging workers to join in large numbers. If the labour reforms remain in place, further industrial action could follow. The government has yet to respond to the union’s latest demands.
