Portugal's Historic Sites See 4.38% Drop in Visitors Amid Renovations

Museums and Monuments of Portugal (MMP) saw fewer visitors in 2025 than the previous year. The drop came as several key sites closed for renovations under the country’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). A total of 4.8 million people visited MMP venues in 2025. This figure marks a decline of 222,000 from 2024, equivalent to a 4.38% reduction.

The decrease followed temporary closures of multiple cultural sites. These shutdowns were part of Portugal’s wider PRR initiative, aimed at upgrading and restoring historic buildings.

The renovations led to a noticeable drop in visitor numbers for 2025. With 4.8 million recorded, the decline reflects the impact of site closures. The PRR works are expected to continue affecting attendance in the coming year.
