Disciplinary Proceedings Against Former Potsdam Mayor Mike Schubert (SPD) Dropped
Potsdam's ex-mayor Mike Schubert cleared of corruption but found guilty of misconduct
POTSDAM (dpa/bb) — Disciplinary proceedings against Mike Schubert, the former mayor of Potsdam (SPD), have been discontinued, the Brandenburg Interior Ministry confirmed in response to a dpa inquiry. Schubert had faced criticism for accepting invitations to a series of sporting events.
"The official disciplinary proceedings have concluded," the ministry stated. "The case was closed with a finding of misconduct." The decision also took into account that the public prosecutor's investigation against Schubert had been dropped in December 2024 after he paid a five-figure financial penalty. Several media outlets had previously reported on the matter.
No Conviction for Accepting Undue Advantages
Schubert came under significant pressure in early 2024 over allegations that he had accepted free VIP tickets to sporting events for years. While prosecutors launched an investigation into potential misuse of office, they ultimately dropped the case in December 2024—conditional on Schubert paying a substantial fine.
Schubert consistently denied any corruption but acknowledged that his actions had left him open to criticism. He also argued that he had simply continued the invitation practices of his predecessors in office and had not questioned them upon taking up his post.
In a citizen referendum last May, a majority of voters supported Schubert's removal as mayor. After roughly six and a half years in office, he was forced to step down early.
