TU Berlin's main building closes indefinitely over severe structural decay

The main building of TU Berlin has shut down indefinitely due to severe structural problems. Years of leaking ceilings, damp walls, and water damage have made the site unsafe for students and staff. The closure comes as part of a wider crisis affecting university facilities across the city. For years, students have complained about crumbling infrastructure at TU Berlin. The main building, which hosts large lecture halls, now poses safety risks after decades of neglect. President Fatma Deniz confirmed the structure is no longer fit for use, leaving many courses without a physical space.

The shutdown hits first-year students hardest, as key teaching areas are now off-limits. Students have rejected proposals to move classes online, arguing that TU Berlin should remain a campus-based university. Friedrich Lauenstein, a student tour guide, described his embarrassment when showing visitors around the decaying buildings. The problems extend beyond one site. Many TU Berlin buildings operate in emergency mode, plagued by asbestos, mould, and water damage. The university faces a €2.4 billion repair backlog, part of Berlin’s €8.2 billion total for state-run institutions. In response, the Berlin Senate has promised faster renovations. A new state-owned company, the University Construction Company, will now oversee repairs. But with funding shortages and extensive damage, fixes may take years.

The closure leaves thousands of students without proper learning spaces. While the Senate has pledged action, the scale of repairs remains daunting. For now, TU Berlin must find temporary solutions as its main building stays empty.
