Right-wing violence surges in Bargteheide as attacks escalate in 2025
Bargteheide in Schleswig-Holstein has seen a sharp rise in right-wing violence over the past year. A series of attacks, including arson, assaults, and threats, have targeted political opponents and a local youth centre. Official reports show a 20 percent increase in such incidents across the region since 2023.
The Autonomous Youth Center in Bargteheide was first broken into in November, with intruders leaving far-right symbols and AfD slogans. Months later, in late May 2024, the building was set ablaze in an arson attack. Then, in June 2025, it was hit by another fire, after which local AfD politicians shared a provocative photo online.
Violence has also spilled into public spaces. On March 4, two young people were assaulted by masked attackers at Bargteheide station—one armed with a gun, the other with a knife. One victim suffered facial injuries. Just over a week later, on March 12, another young person was beaten by two assailants wearing balaclavas in the parking lot of Eckhorst Gymnasium. A left-wing activist was also threatened by three masked individuals in a car on March 7. Data from the Zebra monitoring group reveals that one-third of all violent incidents in the Stormarn district occurred in Bargteheide. Across Schleswig-Holstein, 164 violent acts affected 163 people in 2024 alone, with 125 of these driven by racist motives.
The repeated attacks in Bargteheide highlight a growing pattern of targeted violence. Authorities have recorded a significant rise in far-right incidents, with political opponents and community spaces bearing the brunt. The situation reflects broader trends in the region, where racist and extremist motives continue to fuel aggression.
