Romania to be Guest of Honour at Frankfurt Book Fair 2028 - Romania to Shine as 2028 Frankfurt Book Fair Guest of Honor

Romania will serve as the 2028 Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair, organizers announced on Friday. The official agreement was signed in the Romanian capital of Bucharest, according to a statement from the fair in Frankfurt am Main.

"Romanian literature has long been a vibrant presence in Europe, driven by a powerful contemporary scene," said Juergen Boos, director of the Frankfurt Book Fair. He highlighted authors such as Mircea Cărtărescu and Gabriela Adameșteanu, whose works reflect a country shaped by political upheaval and new beginnings. "We look forward to showcasing the rich, multilingual literary landscape of Romania in Frankfurt," Boos added.

Romanian Culture Minister András Demeter called the signing a "pivotal moment" that recognizes the growing prominence of Romanian literature on the global cultural stage. The Guest of Honor program, he said, will spotlight the dynamism of Romania's cultural scene.

Romania will be the Guest of Honor at the 80th Frankfurt Book Fair, scheduled for October 11–15, 2028. The Czech Republic and Chile will hold the honor in 2026 and 2027, respectively. The Guest of Honor tradition began in 1976, and since 1988, a different country or region has been featured annually, with a primary goal of increasing translations from the guest nation into German.
