Russia and Saudi Arabia Launch Visa-Free Travel for Short Stays

Russia and Saudi Arabia have introduced a visa-free travel agreement for short-term visits. The new rules came into effect on 11 May 2023, allowing citizens of both countries to stay for up to 90 days without a visa. However, the exemption does not cover work, study, or long-term residence. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced the implementation of the agreement on 6 May 2023. Under the new terms, Russian citizens can visit Saudi Arabia for up to 90 days within a calendar year—either in a single trip or multiple visits. Saudi nationals now enjoy the same 90-day visa-free stay in Russia.

Previously, Saudi travellers needed an electronic visa or a regular visa on arrival to enter Russia. The new rules simplify entry for tourism and business but maintain visa requirements for work, education, or permanent residence. Russian citizens travelling for employment, studies, or religious pilgrimages like Hajj or Umrah during the Hajj season must still obtain a visa.

The agreement removes visa requirements for short-term visits between the two countries. Citizens can now stay for up to 90 days without a visa, though work, study, and permanent residence still require official permits. The changes took effect on 11 May 2023.
