Saxon Police Face Scrutiny Over Rising Misconduct and Racism Allegations
The Saxon police force is under scrutiny after reports revealed a rise in suspected cases of misconduct among officers. Since 2020, 128 incidents have been recorded, including derogatory and potentially racist remarks. The Left Party has now called for greater transparency from the authorities. The Interior Ministry first documented these incidents in 2020 following an inquiry by the Left Party. Initially, biannual reports were published, but they were later removed from the official website. The ministry has since stopped releasing these updates entirely.
Two officers have already faced serious consequences, with one dismissed and another undergoing termination proceedings. Disciplinary actions and criminal investigations have also been launched in other cases. Despite this, critics argue the police have not treated the issue as a priority.
In response, the force set up a 'Coordination Unit for Extremism Prevention and Democratic Engagement'. Its role is to address concerns about extremist behaviour and improve internal accountability. The Left Party continues to push for more openness in how the police handle such cases. With 128 suspected incidents since 2020, the pressure for reform remains high. The deletion of past reports and the halt in publishing updates have only intensified demands for clarity.
