More and more weapons in Saxony - Demand for a small gun license - Saxony's gun ownership surges in 2025 with stricter license checks

Saxony saw a steady rise in firearms ownership during 2025, with both licenses and registered weapons increasing. Authorities recorded nearly 94,250 firearms-related permits, marking a growth of around 1,500 from the previous year. At the same time, officials revoked licenses in almost 150 cases after reliability checks. The total number of licensed gun owners in Saxony reached about 32,800 by the end of 2025, an increase of roughly 300 from 2024. Over the past five years, the number of registered firearms climbed by nearly 11,000, with 1,700 more added in 2025 alone. By December, citizens held around 157,300 registered firearms across the state.

Authorities carried out around 23,000 reliability checks on license holders during the year. Despite the rise in permits, some areas saw stark differences in ownership. The Erzgebirgskreis district led with close to 10,000 firearms permits, while Chemnitz had the fewest, at around 4,200. In addition to traditional firearms, permits for blank-firing, irritant, and signal weapons also grew. By the end of 2025, roughly 25,200 such permits were active in Saxony.

The data shows a clear upward trend in both firearms ownership and licensing across Saxony. With stricter checks in place, authorities continue to monitor and revoke permits where necessary. The total number of registered weapons now stands at over 157,000, reflecting a steady increase over recent years.
