Senate Democrats block $1B White House ballroom funding over budget rules

A Republican proposal to fund a new White House ballroom has hit a roadblock. Senate Democrats blocked the plan, arguing it breaks budget rules. The project was intended to boost security after a recent breach attempt at a high-profile event.

The $1 billion funding for East Wing upgrades, including the ballroom, was added to a partisan spending bill. Senate Republican leaders and the White House pushed for its inclusion, citing security concerns. Their urgency followed an incident where an armed individual tried to enter the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough ruled that the spending violated budget regulations. Democrats seized on this decision to halt the proposal. Republicans now intend to revise the bill to meet the required standards. Opponents claim the ballroom funding does not align with fiscal guidelines. Supporters insist it is essential for protecting President Donald Trump. The dispute has delayed the project for now.

The blocked funding leaves the ballroom’s future uncertain. Republicans will adjust the bill to comply with Senate rules before resubmitting it. The outcome will determine whether the security upgrades proceed as planned.
