Senate probe at Lake Nakuru stalls amid security and access disputes
A Senate committee's visit to Lake Nakuru has sparked controversy. The team, investigating the disappearance of fisherman Brian Odhiambo and displacement issues, faced criticism for not visiting affected areas. Security concerns and refusal of access to certain locations hindered their progress.
The committee, led by Senator Fatuma Dullo, confirmed over 500 people had been displaced due to rising water levels in the lake. However, activists, like Masese Kemunche, slammed the committee for not going to the ground and investigating the situation firsthand. They urged the team to visit the affected areas, insisting residents were ready to meet them.
The committee's visit was initially planned to include Lake Nakuru National Park but was cancelled due to security concerns. The security team also refused to accompany the committee to two identified areas: Park View and Manyani. Despite spending three hours at the County Commissioner's office, the team did not proceed to the identified areas. Senator Tom Ojienda assured that their process would not interfere with the criminal case against six rangers charged with abducting Odhiambo. Meanwhile, Senator Tabitha Karanja highlighted the issue of poisoned fish in the lake due to chemicals and waste from industries, stressing the need to stop this as per court orders. No relevant information was found about a committee visiting the locations in January 2025 related to Odhiambo's disappearance and displacement issues.
The Senate committee's visit to Lake Nakuru raised questions about access to affected areas and the thoroughness of their investigation. Despite facing challenges, the committee gathered information and addressed key issues, including displacement and pollution. The committee's next steps and findings will be closely watched.
